Hummingbird and Seascape - Acrylic on
Canvas |
William has built a unique
graphic vocabulary through thousands of hours of observing, sketching,
and painting scenes from the natural world. His work is both painterly
and boldly graphic. In "Hummingbird and Seascape" William invites
the viewer into the image using the deep perspective of the shoreline,
but at the same time forcefully reminds the viewer of the painting's surface
using thick, aggresive brushstokes, and a heavy white outline on the hummingbird.
This device recurrs in many of his works, and forces the viewer to notice
both the image portrayed, and the graphic composition of the work.
