Penny Otwell - The Red Series - 2005

      The acrylic paintings in this series were done indoors from my imagination during July, a long, hot month this year!  I regularly paint outdoors but the intense heat drove me into the studio.  As I kept watering my garden, the leaves and fronds of my Mother’s garden visually surfaced from a long time ago and I remembered how I love green and red together.  I wanted to explore these brilliant colors within the shapes in a garden.  I let the flow of the paint lead me through and begin each piece as the El Portal temperatures soared outside.  

 Some pieces were made by putting large globs of paint on the far edge of the gessoed paper, then twisting and turning the paper, letting it drip in different directions!  I allowed my decorative side to finish each idea.  It was pure art play, and my imagination was heightened with each new piece completed.  Using different acrylic mediums provided various finished surfaces.   Producing one after the other, I started seeing them as a group.  Within four weeks I had produced six fresh pieces I liked.  It was a spontaneous project that allowed me to express my love for plant forms and the color red.

Williams Gallery West maintains a permanent inventory of American and International fine art, folk art, vintage prints, photography, jewelry, pottery, and art glass, and features a number of special exhibitions each year.  The gallery is located at 40680 Highway 41 in Oakhurst, just North of Days Inn.

Gallery hours are Tuesday through Sunday, Noon to 6 PM, and by appointment.
