How Precious be the Water depicts an apache woman in buckskin dress. She raises a water skin to the sky, eyes closed in prayer, as though praying to the four directions. Her hair is long and flowing, and braided with feathers. Her arms are draped with long fringe and extended tassels merging with the form of the wood. Reed chose a piece of burnt manzanita for the sculpture, with natural voids blackened and charred, creating a striking contrast to the rich reds of the wood, and contrasting with the theme of the work as well. One of a series of four pieces produced by the artist celebrating water. |
