original illustration from the epic Indian poem "The Song of Hiawatha" by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow.

Hiawatha in eagle feather headdress.  Beautifully executed in a loose freehand style.  Headdress is rendered in bold black ink with colored details on head band.  Hiawatha stares nobly into the distance, perhaps having a vision, or waiting for the arrival of the Black-Robe strangers that signal the ending of the epic poem.

Detail of face.

Good condition overall.  Minor age yellowing. Stain on top left corner. Two small holes near top left which look like insect damage. Semi-circular tear on right edge of paper (visible in photo to the right of the large feather in the headdress).  Framed in museum quality frame in excellent condition.

Detail with artist's signature.

"By the shore of Gitche Gumee,

By the shining big sea water,

Att he doorway of his wigwam,

In the pleasant summer morning,

Hiawatha stood and waited..."
