Mildred creates her own glazes, rather than
purchasing pre-mixed commercial brands.
Her miniature pots with Indian designs are first thrown on the
wheel, then dried to a leather hard stage and trimmed. The shape of some
pots is altered by paddling the sides, or manipulating the neck into a
square or oval shape. The
designs are then carved by hand using a needle tool. When the pots have
thoroughly dried they are smoothed with a scrubber and put in the kiln
for a bisque firing. After removal from the kiln, a mixture of Black
Barnard clay and water is sponged on the design then immediately wiped
with a clean damp sponge. This creates the darker lines of the carved
image against the lighter clay of the pot. The interior is then given a
glossy black glaze and put in the kiln for a second firing at a higher
temperature. |
