Jasper Jar

Antique hand-carved Chinese jasper jar with tripod legs, raised relief carving, and bird cap. Exceptionally fine variegated yellow and orange jasper with areas of clear stone in the matrix. Piece is encircled with flowering branches, with a second bird perched high on the jar's shoulder.

 Probably used as an inkwell or water jar for painting or calligraphy.  Purchased in San Francisco in 1971.  Hand carved wooden stand is included.
