Bloodstone Jar

circa 1850 - Ch'ing Dynasty

Antique hand-carved Chinese bloodstone jar with raised relief figures and bird cap. Deep green stone with reddish brown inclusions.  Piece is encircled with three playful robed male figures hanging on to intertwining twigs and fruiting branches.  Probably used as an inkwell or water jar for painting or calligraphy.  Purchased in San Francisco in 1971.  Hardwood base included.
