Circa 1800 Ch'ing Dynasty

Antique Chinese jade dragon belt hook. Very pale, almost white, greenish/blue color and elegant rounded form. Purchased in San Francisco in 1971 Seller noted as "Lee".  Hardwood stand included.

Ornamental jade hooks typically consist of a body with a hook on one end and a shafted button on the back side of the base end.  This button could be inserted into a button hole or into a slit in a strap or belt.  The hook, often shaped in t he form of the head of a real or mythological beast, was connected to a loop on the opposite side.  Belt hooks were used on trousers, cloaks, and on belts for suspending weapons.
