Bassa Gela Mask - Woodcarving

Very Good Condition with minor wear from age and use.

dimensions:

 9 1/2" high x 6" wide x 4" deep

Tapered facial structure with pointed chin, exaggerated lips and two teeth inset in mouth.  Traces of thick white pigment around eyes and across bridge of nose. Other pigment traces on forehead and face.  Perforated around edge for attachment to a headdress.  Obvious wear around holes indicating regular use.  A few small nails and traces of red fabric along top edge where headdress was attached.

The Bassa people occupy the central territory of Liberia.  The Gela mask is worn by dancers during visits from foreign dignitaries or during male initiation rites. The wearer portrays a woman, executing feminine dance moves.  The Gela features a two planed face, tribal scarification and a protruding mouth.  The nine-pointed coiffure is a popular Bassa hairdo for women.
