A fine Baule mask from Ivory Coast, Africa.  Distinctive features indicate the piece is probably a portrait mask. Elongated features with narrow nose, large oblong eyes, and scarification on cheeks and forehead. forked beard, and hair split into 6 well defined rows. Traces of white pigment around eyes, and darker tar-like coloration on face.  Intricate detail in hair. Beautifully carved hardwood with fine hand chisel marks on back and around rim. Excellent age patina.  Perforated around edge for attachment to a headdress.  Obvious wear around holes indicating regular use.
