The rat is one of the twelve animals associated with Chinese Astrology. The traits accredited to the rat include quick wits and the ability to accrue  items of value.  Rats are considered a symbol of good luck and wealth in both China and Japan.  the rat of the Chinese Zodiac is charming, clever, and persuasive. Due to its natural charm the rat makes friends easily . The rat is motivated by its own interests, which include money. Greed can become a problem if the Rat isn't careful to keep its priorities straight. The Rat likes to know who is on its side, and will treat its most loyal friends with an extra measure of protection and generosity.  Verbal jousting is a great pleasure for the rat, and outsiders sometimes perceive them as quick-tempered and sharp-tongued.
