Kintaro with a Carp collected in Japan circa 1935 SOLD
19th century stained ivory okimono depicting the ancient hero Kintaro, a legendary child attributed with great strength. Kintaro (also known as Kintoki) and other Japanese heroes, were said to have subdued huge carp at a young age as proof of their strength and courage. Figure stands confidently on a sea shell, proudly presenting his catch, and is dressed in a cap tied with a bow at the back, and a kimono decorated with floral and geometric designs. Large ear lobes, symbolizing wisdom. The carp typically symbolizes virility and strength. |
