Ivory Snuff Bottle

collected in Japan circa 1935

SOLD

Stunning 19th century ivory snuff bottle with complex scenes carved in deep relief. Extremely fine carving both in the surface detail and the narrative scenes. Carving includes a gathering of ancients drinking sake and conversing intently at a tree-stump table.  A female figure approaches from the side carrying a long-stemmed lotus leaf.  Another figure sits alone, possibly the immortal Hotei, attended by servants carrying food and possibly a flute.  Eight figures in all.  The scene may portray the seven Chinese gods of good fortune. Trees bushes and flowering plants surround the figures.  Bordered at the top and bottom with a lotus petal design.  Entire bottle is carved from one piece.  Masterfully crafted! Every millimeter of surface is decorated with linear and floral designs.  Ivory or bone spoon in good condition.

Excellent Condition.  Tiny dark specks are dirt and or dust stuck in the tiny nooks and crannies.

Mellow patina.
