Bishamon with Pagoda collected in Japan circa 1935 SOLD 19th century stained ivory okimono depicting the immortal Bishamon holding a miniature pagoda. Figure wears the helmet of a samurai, and a kimono decorated with linear and botanical designs. A well trimmed beard and mustache and a serious expression give the figure a sense of confidence and strength. Bishamon, God of Fortune, is known as a saintly general who guarded the Buddhist pantheon. Bishamon protected Buddhist doctrine from armies of demons, and bestowed great wealth onto those who displayed great courage, mercy, or kindness. |
