Costa Rican Mayan

Ear Spools

circa 500 to 1000 AD

From a California private collection

A fine pair of Mayan greenstone ( serpentine ) ear spools ( ear flares ) from the Nicoya region of Costa Rica.  Soft green stone with mottled matrix.  lovely form. Drilled for backing post.  Both are numbered inside rim with a fine black pen 8704/2 and 8704/3.

Jade, jadeite, and greenstone were precious materials in the eyes of the pre-Columbian peoples of Costa Rica, and were worked into a wide variety of items from tools and utensils to items worn as emblems of social and political power.

Good condition with typical age wear.  A few shallow chips and rough spots on edges but nothing significant.   No repairs. Display very well.

dimensions: approx 2" diameter at outer rim x 1" high

one is slightly larger than the other.
