Howard Pyle

(1853-1911)

Howard Pyle is one of the most recognized romantic illustrators of all time.  Pyle focused his work on illustrating tales of conflict and adventure, and is best known for his images of the legends of King Arthur and Robin Hood, as well as for creating the archetypal modern image of the swashbuckling pirates of the 17th and 18th centuries. His style inspired a generation of science fiction and fantasy illustrators like Kelly Freas and Frank Frizetta.  Pyle combined a mastery of classical drawing and painting techniques with a flare for creating dramatic moments that expressed the core idea of the scene he was illustrating.  His dramatic use of light is similar to the chiaroscuro painting of Rembrandt, and his loose but expressive brushwork adds tension to the sense of adventure and excitement he strove to create.
