This Buddha was photographed outside Chiang Mai, Thailand at one of the region's most magnificent temple complexes, Wat Doi Saket.  The sculpture is one of many Buddha images that adorn the temple grounds.  Painted concrete and plaster sculptures are often displayed at religious sites in the region, and are used to portray gods, goddesses, revered monks and other divine subjects.  Buddhist teachings state that the Buddha reached nirvana, the ultimate state of being, while sleeping in the forest beneath a giant Boab tree.  The image portrays the Buddha at this critical moment, at peace and in balance with the universe.    The smooth whitewash-like pigment creates a sense that the Buddha is glowing from within with divine light. The combination of the Buddha's relaxed, meditative expression, and the weathered, pastel hued patina of the figure creates an overall effect that is restful and serene.
