Redware Pot

Nice Santa Clara burnished redware polychrome pot.  Decorated with traditional geometric designs in creamy white, buff, blue-gray, and orange over orange slip.  Hand built.   Piece is unsigned. 

Good Condition. Typical wear from age.  No chips or cracks. Minor pigment loss here and there.

 

Santa Clara potters have been producing redware pots since the mid 19th century.  White pigment was added around the turn of the century, buff or tan and "weak red" around 1930, then blue gray around 1940. Typical designs include geometric scalloped, zig-zag, and stair step patterns, and also "avunya" dragons, deer, and other animals.
