"On Guard" depicts an Indian brave, most likely Navajo, seated cross-legged with his Winchester rifle poised before him, staring watchfully into the night.  A lovely woman in a buckskin dress reclines behind him with a drowsy expression, head slightly raised as if about to drift off to sleep.  Both are seated on a lovely pastel toned Yei rug.  The scene is a classic portrayal of a man protecting his partner.
