"Cautious" is one of a series of images depicting mountain men / trappers and their mounts. This seasoned mountain man is on alert, watching for danger on the trail. He is dressed in fringed buckskins, wearing an animal hide cap, probably badger or fox. He carries his hunting rifle raised, heavily decorated on the barrel with feathers, Indian style, possibly kill trophies. His mount appears to be a bay mare with a white blaze, outfitted with a tanned hide blanket and a western saddle.

Hank Richter is an established Western American cowboy artist with a prestigious history as a painter, sculptor, educator, and art director. Richter was born in Cleveland Ohio, and currently lives and works in Phoenix, Arizona. He graduated with honors from the prestigious Philadelphia Museum School of Art. He is listed in
Who’s Who in American Art, and served as president of the board of directors for the AICA - American Indian and Cowboy Artists. His educational experience includes teaching classes in sculpture, cartooning and drawing at The Principia College in Elsah, Illinois.

Richter’s work is included in many public and private collections, including the Heard Museum, the City of Glendale AZ, and the First National Bank of Arizona. His exhibition experience is extensive, including the Master’s of the West Show at the Autry Museum of Western Heritage; The Mountain Oyster Western Contemporary Art Show; and the Empire 100 Western Art Show and Sale. | |
