"Cautious" is one of a series of images depicting mountain men / trappers and their mounts. This seasoned mountain man is on alert, watching for danger on the trail. He is dressed in fringed buckskins, wearing an animal hide cap, probably badger or fox. He carries his hunting rifle raised, heavily decorated on the barrel with feathers, Indian style, possibly kill trophies. His mount appears to be a bay mare with a white blaze, outfitted with a tanned hide blanket and a western saddle.

The figure is rendered with careful attention to detail on a plain background, grounded by the shadow of the figure.
