Early 20th century Philippine knife ( Talibon ) with wooden scabbard

Collected in the Philippines in 1938.

Smaller form of the Philippine Pirah, Barong, or Bolo, with a long curved blade, and elbow near the hilt.  Handle decoration consists of a  wave-like spiral design at the base of the hilt, and a simple repeating triangular design closer to the blade.  Hand carved hardwood scabbard is carved in two pieces, held together with rattan binding.  A great example of the form. Displays very well.

dimensions 18 1/4" long - 1 3/8" wide at widest point - handle 4" long - Scabbard 16 1/2" long, 2 1/4" wide at widest point

Good overall condition, especially the wooden sheath which is very well preserved.  Rattan is excellent.  There is one very fine 1/2" crack on back side near open end of scabbard.  Blade is solid, with some surface rust from age. There are two cracks in the handle near where it joins with the blade, one on each side.  One is approx 1 1/2" long, the other approx 3/4".  Handle is firmly attached despite cracking.
