Charles Russell was born in 1864 in St. Louis, Missouri, spent many years as a wrangler in the  Montana Territory, and was as rough and rugged as the Western scenes he portrayed.  His pictures bring to life the characters and scenes of Western life.  Cowboys, cattle, Indians, hunting, trapping, horses,  wildlife, buffalo hunting, and frontier life are all subjects of his work. Russell never received formal art training, and for many years he painted for his own enjoyment, giving away most of what he produced to his friends.  When he married, his wife saw to it that his paintings and sketches were introduced to the serious art world, and he is now recognized as one of the most important Western artists of all time. His work includes bronze sculpture, oil painting, watercolor, and beautifully illustrated letters. This book contains the story of his life and a large cross-section of his work.
