Antique Katanga Copper Ingot Cross Currency SOLD Collected circa 1975 Katanga is a rich copper mining region in Zaire. The "Anda" or Katanga cross was used in the Congo and other regions of central Africa as early as the 15th century AD, and in some areas is still accepted today. 19th century records indicate that "...one cross was worth ten kilos of flour, five fowl, three kilos of rubber, or six axes. A bride price consisted of fourteen large crosses, one female slave, a she-goat, and a gun." Very Good Condition. Nice age patina with polished copper areas showing through the darker surface. dimensions: 9 1/2" from tip to tip. Approx 1/4" thick
